Remember last week when most top teams played cupcakes? Usually in the second week everyone starts playing better teams after beating up on the week-1 weaklings. But this weeks match-ups looked oddly similar to week-1 and there was not much to look forward to. But a few of those the supposed "weaklings" had other plans that resulted in yet another exciting weekend of college football (and upsetting for some).

ULM, Oregon State, UCLA and Arizona refused to be part of the "second helping" for #8 Arkansas, #13 Wisconsin, #16 Nebraska, and #18 OK State, respectively. These spoilers did not back down or give up and they believed in themselves before the game and through 60-minutes of tough play. And ULM pulled it off at Arkansas. There were other close ones: both #2 USC and #7 Georgia had their hands full until taking over in the 4th. And #19 Michigan and #22 ND pulled away in close ones. THIS is one of the reasons I love watching this sport. Long live the underdog.
TAM and Mizzou were welcomed to the SEC by Florida and Georgia, respectively. Both TAM and Mizzou proved worthy of their admittance into the SEC but they were also shown it'll be no walk in the park getting through SEC defenses and putting up with "old man football" style. The UGA-Mizzou game was close until UGA's defense finally stepped it up another notch and shut down what had been a rather impressive Mizzou offense.
BYU scheduled in a cupcake in Weber State...and they just ate 'em up. Final score: 45 - 13. It was a bit of a snoozer (see picture) but gave BYU a chance to let some inexperience get some time on the filed.

It might seem early but I am already unimpressed with the voters. Not that I could do better but here we are in week-2 and four teams have already dropped out of the Top 25 (one from #8). Seems that a little further research would have prevented the voters from placing those teams there to begin with. Yet these very voters wield so much power in the final outcome of the season and bowl match-ups. And the Coaches Poll has already pitted 'Bama and LSU again when LSU has played only weak teams and will not face a winning team until October.

I like the new rules: 1-yd shield around the punt returner, sit out for a play if your helmet pops off, and the new kickoff rules. The NCAA is making some changes to protect players from what some will continue to see in NFL careers. Read the current SI cover story ("The Other Half of the Story") about ex-NFL players who struggle daily from their injuries. I for one am glad the NCAA is making decisions to protect the players in the weekly battles we all love to cheer on.
